Historic building in the main street of Scottsdale.

One of the larger towns in the Dorset Shire north east of Launceston it is central to waterfalls, forest reserves and scenic walks. Restaurants, hotels, historic and farm accommodation and an adequate shopping centre.

Scottsdale was named in 1863 after government surveyor James Scott whose journey in 1852 led to the opening of the region. It was earlier known as 'Cox's Paradise' after a miller, Thomas Cox, an early settler who took up land on a creek near the present township and later was also known as Ellesmere. The town services a rich agricultural area (primarily dairying and crops, such as vegetables), timber (especially pine) and food processing industries. The Army has Food Research Laboratories here and it's also an important hop-growing area.
Scottsdale is considered the centre of this north east region and is the largest city between Launceston and the east coast. The Information Centre is just off the main street at the northern end of town and well worth a visit.

What to See and Do:
View the Settlers Colonial Bottle Display, hops at Tonganah (6km) and milking at dairy farms at Legerwood (approximately 21km) and visit nearby forest reserves.
Take a photos of the 'Thumbs Up' sculpture to the south of town near the Forestry Centre. Now recognised as one of Australia's Big Things since I took and published a photo in January 2014. I began the on-line 'Big Things' list in 1992 and if you have anything to add to it, please contact me.
