Only 88km from Hobart, this is a area with a rich Aboriginal history. The name Taranna is an Aboriginal word meaning kangaroo, the early natives saw the area as a thriving fishing and hunting place. The pretty Tasman Peninsula town of Taranna is noted for having the first railway in Australia which ran from Taranna to Long Bay, near Port Arthur. Operated by convicts, it travelled a distance of 7km., transporting passengers and supplies arriving overland from Hobart to the Port Arthur penal settlement. Man-powered, the carriages weighed less than half a ton and were pushed up hill by convicts who jumped on board to ride down. From Taranna you can head west to the towns of Saltwater Creek and Nubeena and visit the Coal Mines Historic Site and complete the loop to Port Arthur. There is a wildlife park at Taranna featuring Tasmanian Devils, and Federation Chocolates will be found nearby. There are several B&Bs offering accommodation, a couple of restaurants including 'Fish Lips', offering fresh seafood on the highway overlooking the water, which is one of my favourites.
