HOBART TOURING MAP
Exploring around Hobart.
DRIVE YOURSELF TOWN TOUR (Approx 50km)
Start your Hobart tour from the wharf precinct. The places this tour will include, in order,
are Constitution Dock, the Lark Distillery, the Maritime Museum, historic Battery Point, the
Casino, the Mt Nelson Signal Station, Shot Tower, Mt Wellington, the Cascade Brewery, the Female
Factory, the Botanical Gardens and Government House, Theatre Royal. The Penitentiary, historic
Runnymede, Cadbury, and Kangaroo Bluff and the Rosny Historical Centre on the Eastern Shore.
Park in the wharf area near Mures and wander around the docks area noting the sculptures and
the magnificent period buildings along Hunter Street. Constitution Dock is a hive of activity
between Christmas and New Year as yachts from Sydney and Melbourne arrive at the end of their
racing. Stroll up to the Lark Distillery, to Salamance Place, the Maritime Museum and the Arts
Gallery and Museum before heading west along Davey Street, turn left after St David's Park and
left again at Hampdon Rd into Battery Point.
Visit Arthurs Circus before continuing west to the Wrest Point Casino, Australia's first. Return
to Sandy Bay Road and continue to Nelson Rd and drive to the old Signal Station and Lookout. Back
to Sandy Bay Rd and continue through Taroona to the historic Shot Tower. Retrace yoiur journey to
Princes St in Sandy Bay and turn left across the Southern Expressway o the Huon Hwy and turn left
for the drive to the pinnacle of Mt Wellington. return from the mountain via Cascade Rd and visit
the brewery and the nearby Female Factory. return to the city via Macquarie St, past the Anglesea
Barracks, and go through the roundabout, past the bridge turn-off and see Government House on your
left before arriving at the Botanical Gardens. leave the gardens and continue along this road to
overpass and join the Brooker Hwy. At the bottom of the hill, Risdon Rd, turn left then sharp left
into Bay Rd and visit Runnymede House, just up the hill. retrace your steps to the Brooker Hwy and
turn left. Keep going around 10km to the turnoff to Cadbury which is clearly marked. Return via
the same route, turning left at Goodwood Rd near the showgrounds and racecourse and cross the Bowen
Bridge. On your left a little way along the road is the site where the original settlement took
place. Continue along the road to the roundabout and turn sharp right at the gaol towards Lindisfarne
and Bellerive. Cross the highway and turn into Rosny Rd where you will see the historic centre
near the large shopping centre. Take the road into Bellerive and visit the Kangaroo Bluff before
retracing your trip to rejoin the highway and cross the bridge turning towards the city. At the
roundabout at Brooker Hwy, turn right onto the highway then left at Brisbane St and visit the
Penitentiary. Return down Campbeell st where you will see the Theatre Royal opposite the hospital.
Continue along Campbell St to the wharf area.

RICHMOND AND SORELL
Cross the Tasman Bridge and take the A3 through the eastern suburbs past the airport and across the
causeways through Midway Point on to Sorell.
Our free maps of this area and the Tasman Peninsula are available at the local information centre
and will give you some ideas of what to see and do. A short drive east along the Arthur Highway
will bring you to the turn-off to Lewisham and Carlton Beach, now basically residential areas for
Hobart, there are some wonderful beaches to visit. If you want you can continue through these
towns on to Dunalley (some loose surface) and return to Sorell via the highway stopping at the
Convict Museum at Copping, or retrace your path to Sorell.
From Sorell, head north along the A3 to the turn-off to the west to Richmond, one of Australia's
most historic towns.
There is plenty to see and do in Richmond and our map has all the main places of interest marked.
You will need a few hours to see everything and you can return to Hobart several ways. The Tea
Tree Road will take you to Brighton past the Bonorong Wildlife Park to join the Midland Highway
from the north. The Grasstree Hill Rd returns you along a scenic drive over the mountains to
Risdon, or you can return to Cambridge and rejoin the A3 back the way you came.
MOUNT WELLINGTON AND FERN TREE
Follow Davey Street west past St David's Park and the Anglesea Barracks and the turn-off to the
Southern Outlet. there are some magnificent views over Hobart from this road.
Continue on several kilometres to the turn-off to Mt wellington and keep going a kilometre to
the pretty mountain town of Fern Tree. there is a pub here where you can get some refreshments
before coming back to the Pinnacle Road turn-off and taking the road to the summit. About half
way up on the left you will see a layby for The Springs. Until the fires of 1967 there was a
wonderful old hotel here which catered for visitors offering spectacular dining and accommodation
over the city.
There are observation platforms and facilies at the summit and on a clear day spectacular views
across the city and as far as weather permits. Be sure to take a jacket or jumper as it is often
cold and windy at the top.
Rejoin the Huon Hwy and on your way back turn on to Strickland Ave. which becomes Cascade Rd to call
in to the brewery and the Female Factory, returning to the city via Macquarie St.
TAROONA AND KINGSTON
Before the Southern Outlet was constructed the route to Kingston and the Channel was via Sandy Bay
Rd. Turn left at Sandy Bay Rd at the western end of St David's Park off Davey St and just keep
following the road all the way to Kingston, some 20km.
You will pass through the suburb of Sandy Bay and follow the coastline past the Casino, to Lower
Sandy Bay where the Alexandra Battery is still on the hill with guns pointing seaward, through
Taroona to the Shot Tower, where ammunition was made, and on through the hills to Kingston.
Visit the beach and the Antarctic Division (business hours only) before returning via the Southern
Outlet. There is a turn-off to see the lookout and Signal Station at Mt Nelson on the way back.
Alternatively, you can head south towards Huonville on the A6 and turn onto Strickland Avenue near
Longley to return via Fern Tree and Mount Wellington as in the tour above.
BRIDGEWATER AND BRIGHTON
A short drive north through Claremont where you can visit the Cadbury-Schweppes Factory and
Alpenrail Swiss Village, will bring you to the Bridgewater Bridge. just north of the bridge on
the A10 are a couple of wineries before returning and crossing into the riverside town of Bridgewater.
A little further on is Brighton and another kilometre or so the pretty and historic town of Pontville.
Even further on, at Bagdad, there is a craft and antique shop well worth visiting and, if you look to
the left of the road there are some astounding mansions on the hill.
Back to Brighton and the turn-off to Bonorong Wildlife Park where you can see Tasmanian Devils and
other animals before either returning to the main road and back to Hobart, or continue towards
Richmond and return as in the Richmond and Sorell tour above.
Alternatively when you first reach the bridge, you can continue on along the western side of the
river to New Norfolk, cross the river, and return via Dromedary to Bridgewater to resume this tour.
A round trip of around 40km with some wonderful scenery along the river.
ROKEBY AND SOUTH ARM
Take the A3 across the Tasman Bridge to the eastern shore and continue past Warrane to the South
Arm Hwy (B33) and furn south. You will travel through the suburb of Howrah before the road passes
through fields to Rokeby where there is an historic church to visit. Continue on through Lauderdale
and Sandford and take a short detour to Cremorne where there is an excellent beach.
Rejoin the highway and continue on till the Clifton Beach turn-off and visit this pretty
seaside town.
Back to the highway and follow the road right around to South Arm and Opossum Bay where there
are spectacular views across the river to Kingston, Hobart and Mt Wellington.
On your return trip, turn west at the Shoreline Hotel onto Clarence Rd and return via Bellerive,
stopping at the Kangaroo Bluff Battery and the Rosny Historic Centre. A lookout west of the road at
Rosny Hill gives fine views of Hobart across the river.
