Exploring the Tamar Valley

Take the West Tamar Highway through Riverside to Legana and on to Exeter. There is an information centre here for visitors to the Tamar Valley and, just to the east, are the beginnings of the wineries in the area. On the left between the two towns is Grindelwald, a Swiss Village on the top of the hill and, a little further on, on the right, Bradys Lookout.

Continue along the highway north to Beaconsfield and visit the Grubb Shaft Mine and explore the town before heading north to Beauty Point where you can visit the Platypus House and the Seahorse World on the wharf. Return to the Batman Bridge and cross the river and head north at the junction with the East Tamar Highway to George Town. Here you will see the Watch House in the main street, Grove House, and a monument to Lieutenant Colonel Paterson who founded the first northern Tasmanian settlement on this site.

From George Town head north to Low Head and the Maritime Museum and lighthouses before returning through George Town to the turn off to Bridport, to the east.
Take this road to Pipers River and on to the turn-off south to Pipers Brook. There are many wineries to see in this area. (See map and index).
Continue south to the Lilydale Falls and Lilydale, take a small detour to see the WAG Walker Rhododendron Reserve, and return to Launceston through Rocherlea.

There is some accommodation in the Tamar valley including a caravan park at Exeter and a motel at George Town.
