LORNE - VICTORIA
On the Erskine River, surrounded on three sides by forest ranges, and to the south by the spectacular Southern Ocean, it was the first place declared an area of 'special significance and natural beauty' by the Victorian Government.
On a bay named after Captain Louttit, who sought shelter there around 1840 while retrieving cargo from a ship-wreck, it was first settled by William Lindsay, a timber-cutter who began felling the area. Subdivision began in 1869 and the town was named after the Marquis of Lorne. Much of its colourful history is preserved in the gracious homes which remain. An excellent local publication is available free from accommodation houses and information centres to help you enjoy your stay, our fully detailed map of the fascinating Great Ocean Road is also available locally for $1.00.
One of Victoria's best known, and most popular resorts, it offers everything for the holiday-maker. The safe beach is famed for its golden sands and rolling surf. Fishing spots will be found all along the coast; salmon, snapper and garfish are common catches, while whiting, barracuda and trevally can be caught from the pier at Lorne. Trout and bream may be taken from the Erskine and other nearby rivers.
Attractions in and around Lorne
Many short walks through the Lorne-Angahook State Forest offer a pleasant alternative to fishing or swimming. Waterfalls, rivers, canyons and picnic areas may all be visited and enjoyed, and maps of these walks are available locally. Ph: 03 5289 1732.
Of a night, there is a choice of first class restaurants and bistros to tempt the most fastidious. Fresh local seafoods are a speciality and for the budget conscious, the take-aways are wide and varied, and can be enjoyed on the beach, or in the many parks and picnic areas over-looking the bay.
