TIMBOON - VICTORIA
Just east of Curdies River, Timboon was settled in 1877 and became a major timber centre with some 18 mills operating. In 1892 a railway was opened to Timboon and the area flourished. An old trestle bridge just west of town, across the river, and the impressive railway station, are nostalgic reminders of those times.
Timboon is now a rich pastoral area producing lamb, cheese, timber and small-fruits with a population of around 1,000, and a major shopping centre, motel and a host farm.
The nearby Ralph Illedge Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is popular and there are several picnic areas in, and around, the town.
The nearby Timboon Farmhouse Cheesery uses high quality milk from Jersey and Friesian cross-bred cows grazing on natural feed. Camambert, Brie, Triple-cream, Quark and Gourmet Fetta are among the products available at the door. (Open 10am to 4pm. daily.)
