To reach the Alpine High Country take the Hume Freeway north from Melbourne to Wangaratta and turn east onto the Great Alpine Road (Ovens Hwy). The road passes through Mytleford to the turn off to Mt Buffalo, then on to Ovens and into Bright. There is a detour from Bright to Mt Beauty and Falls Creek which is well worth taking.
From Bright continue east through Harrietville to Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain before the descent into Omeo. The road then follows the beautiful Tambo River through small alpine villages to Bairnsdale on the Princes Hwy east of Melbourne. Turn west through Bairnsdale and return to Melbourne along the Highway.
To visit Mt Buller take the Maroondah Hwy to Yea and turn east through Mansfield. To visit Mt Baw Baw travel east along Highway 1 (Princes Hwy) to Moe and turn north towards Erica.
