EXPLORING SOUTH WEST DISCOVERY REGION.
Travellers will pass through the South West Discovery region along the Princes Hwy (1)
between Adelaide and Melbourne, or along the Henty Highway between Horsham and Portland.
Other highways pass through the area including the Glenelg Hwy between Mt Gambier and Ballarat
and the Alt1 coastal road between Mt Gambier and Portland.
Portland was the first setlement in Victoria and has many historic buildings to see. Inland,
the towns of Coleraine and Casterton are large service towns for farms and stations in the region
and in the west, the Glenelg River flows right through the region rising in the Grampians to
the north east. Cruises along the river from Nelson to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves are
a great diversion and a short detour from Alt1 to the Discovery Bay Coastal Park and its 90km
long beach is well worthwhile.
The Great Southern Walk begins at Portland and follows the Glenelg River for much of the way
returning along the beach. Allow a week to see it properly.
The historic towns of Harrow and Balmoral should be included on your tour and there are
falls just west of Hamilton.
There are wineries just west of Portland, several National Parks and great beaches.
This is a wonderful area to spend a few days in whether you visit as a destination or just
stop over on your way through.
