EXPLORING THE GREAT ALPINE ROAD.

To reach the Great Alpine Road take the Hume Hwy north from Melbourne to Wangaratta or the Princes Hwy east to Bainsdale. The road runs between these two towns.
There are restrictions on travelling the road in winter between June and September and chains may have to be worn if you are travelling at this time.
Throughout the rest of the year no restrictions apply although the road passes through the Alpine National Park and normal restrictions applying to littering, camping and fires apply.
For the round trip you should allow a couple of days with an overnight somewhere around mid way.. Use the search at right for area accommodation or the Accommodation link at left for specific town accommodation.
Naturally, if you are travelling in mid-winter you will need to take warm and protective clothing.
