EXPLORING THE GOULBURN VALLEY.

Take Highway 31 north through to the Kilmore turnoff and follow the Northern Hwy through Heathcote to Elmore and Rochester. Then take the Midland Hwy to Shepparton and the Newell Hwy south through Nagambie to Seymour.
From Seymour head east along the Goulburn Valley Hwy and visit Alexandra, Eildon and Mansfield before returning to Alexandra and taking the Maroondah Hwy back to Melbourne.
Several detours along the way are worthwhile including a trip north from Shepparton to Numurkah, a short detour to historic Rushworth, and a visit to the Heathcote area wineries between Heathcote and Elmore.
The Goulburn River flows through most of this area and there are numerous wineries, fruit orchards and canneries including SPC and Ardmona at Shepparton, Lake Eildon in the eastern section which is one of Victoria's most popular holiday destinations although, at present (2009), water levels are low following a prolonged drought, and the return trip to Melbourne passes through dense rainforest near Heathcote.
The Goulburn Valley has something for everyone and the individual towns list opposite has attractions listed town by town. For accommodation in this area use the area search button at right. For town by town accommodation use the Accommodation search at left.
