Leave Melbourne west along the Princes Hwy (M1) towards Geelong, 76km. calling in the the Werribee
Zoo and mansion along the way. Just east of Geelong and north of the highway are the Serendip Sanctuary,
the You Yangs State Park, and a little further north at Anakie one of Australia's best family parks
in the Anakie Fairy Park. If you have children on board this is a must.
Return to Geelong and take the turn-off to Queenscliff on the Bellarine Hwy and continue to Wallington on
the way to Queenscliff.
There is a roundabout here which has turn-offs to the north and south of the peninsula.
Amaze 'n' Things is also at this corner offering family fun and challenges.
To the north is Drysedale, Portarlington Indented Head, and a road around the coast rejoining this highway near
Queenscliff. To the south is Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove and a road to the east joining the highway again
near Point Lonsdale. The best idea is to make a round trip heading either north or south and returning to
this spot before travelling on to Queenscliff and the ferry.
To the north is the western end of the Bellarine Railway at Drysdale, the Portarlington Mill, a memorial in
Batman Park at Indented Head marking the spot where John Batman first landed to found Melbourne, and several
wineries, golf courses and other attractions. These are clearly marked as you approach them.
To the south is Barwon Heads where the TV series Seachange was filmed, Ocean Grove with a large shopping centre,
Point Lonsdale with a beach and historic lighthouse, and several other attractions including a wildlife park.
Take the ferry across to Sorrento and begin you tour of the Morninton Peninsula.
From Sorrento head west to Portsea where Prime Minster Harold Holt went missing. Return through Sorrento,
Rosebud and Rye to Dromana where you can either follow the freeway back to Melbourne through Mornington and Frankston,
or turn south through Cape Schanck and follow the eastern coast through Flinders, Merricks and Hastings rejoining the
freeway near Frankston.
Highlights of the Mornington Peninsula include many wineries, the chairlift at Arthurs Seat, beaches, and quaint
fishing towns along the coast.
