The lookout over Port Phillip Bay at Arthurs Seat

Situated 68km south of Melbourne and close to Port Phillip Bay Arthurs Seat is the highest (302 metres) and most prominent land mass on the Peninsula. Visible from as far away as Lorne (on a clear day) it dominates Dromana and acts as a magnet for tourists visiting the Peninsula.
Arthurs Seat was named by Acting Lt. John Murray, the first explorer to enter Port Phillip Bay in February 1802. The origin of the name 'Arthurs Seat' is the resemblance to a well known beautiful mountain of the same name near Edinburgh, Scotland.
Matthew Flinders was the first person to climb Arthurs Seat on 26 th. April 1802, and placed a scroll with his ship's name under a heap of stones. On 5th. December, 1914, a cairn to Matthew Flinders was built on the same spot by the Dromana Progress Association. The first owner of 'Seawinds' was Mr Chapman, a gardener. The garden was developed by Sir Thomas and Lady Travers in the 1940's. Seawinds was declared a State Park in 1975. 'Holywood Garden of The Moon' was established at the top of Arthurs Seat in the 1930's as a replica of similar facility in California.
The lookout tower on top of Arthurs Seat was once a surveyors tower for sighting purposes and remained until 1874, when it was replaced by a building from Rosebud after the Eastern Lighthouse was completed.
Australias first non-ski chairlift was erected in 1960 and has since been a dominating feature. However due to some unfortunate incidents it now remains idle. It is hoped that it will once again be operational and give pleasure to the many tourists who visit the Peninsula. The Arthurs Seat tourist road was opened on December 14th 1929 by Lord Somers, former Governor of Victoria
On the Arthurs Seat Road are plaques to Murray, Bowen, Flinders and Franklin at lookout points along the road.
