A pleasant rural city with many magnificent buildings created during the wealthy years of the gold rush, it is located around a lake which was the venue for the Olympic rowing events in 1956.
It is also an important touring centre and is the eastern gateway to the Grampians National Park and the Pyreness Ranges, near the Brisbane Ranges and has many things of interest to see and do. There is a wide range of accommodation, extensive shopping facilities and a university.
Ballarat is located 106km. west of Melbourne along the Western Highway (Freeway) and is Victoria's largest inland city with a population around 90,000. Well presented, with magnificent statuary and buildings, it is a delightful city in which to spend a few days.
Ballarat is not only one of Australia's best preserved cities, but it is also one of the most fascinating. Steeped in history, it is a lasting monument to the pioneering adventurers who left their distant home-lands in search of prosperity.
Today Ballarat is a thriving community of around over 90,000 people, and is a communications and industrial centre for a large area of western Victoria. Its colourful history and newer, man-made visitor attractions assure a bright future in tourism. Of course, the occasional nugget is still found floating around the backyard, and at Sovereign Hill you can try your hand at gold-panning from the operating mine, but basically, Ballarat has moved into a new era of prosperity fuelled by its proud citizens who delight in promoting their colourful past, and look forward to a healthy future.
Ballarat has many motels, caravan parks and other forms of accommodation to please the most discerning visitor.
