At the centre of a large volcanic basin in an area known as "Lakes and Craters Country", it is surrounded by large fresh-water lakes which are popular for fishing. There is an historic museum in the main street and the wide street is separated by a park with a large clock tower at the main junction. Excellent views over the town and the surrounding plains are available from the Mt Leura lookout just east of the town.
