Historic main street in Chiltern

Chiltern is a beautiful and interesting stop along the highway between Melbourne and Sydney and has a rich historical collection to visit.
Its rustic colonial atmosphere has been the backdrop for several Australian films including "My Brother Tom", "The True Story of Spit MacPhee" and "Ride a Wild Pony"
Once the home of poet Henry Handel Richardson, her home overlooks the small lake in the township.
A museum on the main intersection of the town features the largest grape vine in Australia, planted over 130 years ago, and growing from the courtyard through the roof, and Chiltern is only a short distance from the renowned wineries of the Rutherglen area.
In the town you must visit Dow's Pharmacy, a chemist shop retaining the appearance and atmosphere as it was 100 years ago. It is now under the care of the National Trust. The Federal Standard Printing Works once produced a number of newspapers informing the local public of events, and today stands much as it did with much of the equipment as, and where, it was when it closed.
The Chiltern Athenaeum has a display of old photographs and memorabilia and reflects life as it was in the 1800s for the first settlers.
