Main Street - Dimboola

A most rewarding detour along the Western Highway is a visit to the Dimboola-Jeparit-Rainbow area. Dimboola (pop 1,800) is on the edge of the Little Desert National Park. Cross the Wimmera River from the town centre and continue south 5km. to the park where you will see a profusion of plants, wildlife and birds. The park is home to the unusual Lowan Bird, which uses the sun to incubate its eggs in mounds of earth. Attractive bush walks and the nearby Horseshoe Bend picnic area beside the Wimmera River add to the pleasure of your visit.
There is an adequate chopping centre with most basic shops, a hotel, motel and a caravan park, and there are cottages on the way to the Little Desert.
The Wimmera region is a vast grain producing area and Dimboola is one of its principal centres. At Wail, just east of the town towards Horsham you will see large silos beside the railway line where grain is stored before transport. On the highway just north of the town there is a large grain storage area. To the west, where the Wimmera River crosses the road is an excellent rest area with toilets and picnic tables. During holiday times and long weekends a kiosk is manned by volunteers providing free tea and coffee to weary travellers along the highway. a credit to the community spirit of the town.
