Foster is a small town on the South Gippsland Hwy which is the main service point for touring the
remarkable Wilsons Promontory National Park. Originally named 'Stockyard Creek' it was a popular stopover for drovers moving cattle between Port Albert and Western Port, which refected its main industry until the name was changed in 1871. Gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s and mining ceased in the 1930s from whence the town has become a pretty and pleasant stop along the highway and an important staging point for visitors to the National Park. Magnificent views over the countryside, Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory are seen from the western approach to the town. There is a golf course and an adequate shopping centre. Several accommodation places will be found including motels and caravan parks using the search engine below. Nearby, at Toora, are the Agnes Falls, Victoria's highest drop falls and worth a visit.
