Horsham and The Wimmera comprise one of the richest farming areas of Victoria, and a vast touring centre offering a range of attractions varying from desert wilderness to the lush fern-glades and waterfalls of The Grampians; from the sheer rock face of Mt. Arapiles, to the plains around Wyperfeld National Park.
Among the places to visit are the many fresh-water lakes and rivers around Horsham which offer every type of water sport and some great fishing spots. Redfin, trout, perch, yellow belly and yabbies can be caught, and there are plenty of places to provide bait and tackle if you need it. (Unfortunately many of the lakes nearby are dry due to the drought at the time of revising this in June 2008. In better times you should plan your fishing visit by contacting the information centre).
Near Natimuk, the world renowned Mount Arapiles offers the challenge of sheer rock faces which attract climbers from all over the world,to pit their skills against the many climbs; or you can just drive to the top and enjoy the spectacular view as you watch the climbers ascending.
A little further afield, at Stawell, Great Western and Ararat, a pleasant hour or so drive away, are some of the better known wineries in Australia. Seppelts Great Western, The Gap Vineyard, Montara Winery, Mount Langhi Ghiran Vineyard, Garden Gully Vineyard, Kimbarra Wines, Cathcart Ridge and Bests Great Western Winery are a few. Tastings and cellar door sales attract thousands each year to buy and sample their fine products.
Throughout the year, thousands visit Horsham. In March, for the Horsham Fishing Competition, and at Easter for the Warracknabeal Wheatlands Festival.
The Apex Fishing Competition is held on the Wimmera River in Horsham between the bridge and Weir Park, and is now the biggest event of its type in Australia, with prizes of over $50,000.
The Annual Vintage Rally is held at the Warracknabeal Agricultural Museum, 50 km. north, and includes demonstrations of machinery, events and varied entertainment.
North-east of Horsham are the towns of Murtoa and Minyip. Murtoa has an outstanding taxidermy museum among its attractions, while Minyip was the location for the popular TV Series 'The Flying Doctors'.
To the south-east are the quaint, historic townships of Balmoral and Harrow. Steeped in pioneering history, they will whisk you away to a century ago as you wander the winding streets.
Wherever you go in or around Horsham, there is much to see and do.
In the city, there are many fine places to visit, and the places of interest guide below lists them. First class accommodation is available at the many motels, caravan parks, hotels, self-contained accommodation and B&Bs listed and many have excellent restaurants. Other fine restaurants and take away food outlets will be found around the city and some are listed here. The extensive Horsham commercial centre can provide most of your requirements and the Horsham Plaza in Darlot St. contains a K Mart and other major variety stores.
Horsham is a 'Tidy Town' and its people are proud of their city, and this shows in their attitude to the many visitors who enjoy it with them. You will be pleased you stopped over in Horsham and a free Wilkins Tourist Maps guide, is available locally to help you enjoy your visit.
