Kilmore is a medium size town just off the Hume Hwy. It is Victoria's oldest inland town and
noted for its many historic buildings and other
attractions including a tramway museum, and has nearby attractions like the
Mt Disappointment State Forest. On the fringe of Bushranger Country, it has links to the Kelly gang through Ned's father 'Red' who spent 6 months in the Kilmore Gaol in 1865 for killing another settler's calf to feed his family. It is claimed that Ned actually committed the crime. Soon after his release he died from 'Dropsy' and is buried somewhere on the outskirts of the town in an unmarked grave. You can visit the old 1859 gaol which is now a tourism complex containing a restaurant and antiques shop in Sutherland St. (Closed Mondays). There are a number of buildings dating back to the 1850s in Sydney St, and Whitburgh Cottage in Piper St. is open to the public. PLACES OF INTEREST: Cable-tram rides and picnic areas. Sydney Rd.
