Originally known as Cunninghame, its name was changed to the more appropriate Lakes
Entrance to reflect its location as the gateway to the extensive salt water
lakes system of eastern Victoria. At the eastern end of the Ninety Mile Beach
it is a popular aquatic centre with sailing, fishing and waterskiing among the
many activities. Not far away, Fraser Island has been developed as a resort
area, and there are many walks in the Nyerimilang Park, a few kilometres south.
Rrestaurants, cafes, bakeries and takeaway food outlets line the main street opposite the picturesque foreshore and marina where you can sit and relax to watch the boats entering and leaving and the prolific bird-life. There is a museum, an art gallery, and a short walk across the footbridge will take you to the Ninety mile Beach where you can swim and relax on the beach. The lakes at Lakes Entrance are Lake Wellington, Lake Reeve, Lake Victoria and Lake King. There are several islands in the waters, the largest being Raymond Island. Cruises operate on the lakes from Lakes Entrance and you can hire boats and fishing gear to try your luck. There is an aquatic centre, bowling greens, mini golf, an excellent 18 hole golf course classified amongst the top 100 in Australia, and a 9 hole course. All of these and the welcoming attitude of the locals, make Lakes Entrance one of the most popular resort areas of Victoria. There is plenty of accommodation with some 20 motels, apartments, several caravan parks and other accommodation. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES:
