Nelson is a pretty little town at the mouth of the Glenelg River, just
over the border from South Australia into Victoria. Surrounded by national parks,
forests and magnificent beaches it is one of Australia's best kept secrets. Only 20 minutes from the major city of Mount Gambier, and 45 minutes from Portland it lies at the western end of the Discovery Bay National Park, it is also at the southern tip of the Lower Glenelg National Park, and is only 20 km. from the Princess Margaret Rose Caves and less from Piccaninnie Ponds Nature Reserve. It really is an ideal place to holiday with fishing, river cruises, bushwalking and swimming only a few of the activities available. Tour boats cruise the river each Wednesday and Saturday from the landing at Nelson to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves up river. Tours operate at other times also, but these ones are permanent. Ring in advance if you are passing through at other times. PLACES OF INTEREST: Discovery Bay Coastal Park Lower Glenelg National Park Mount Richmond National Park (45km.)
