Mountain town on the Great Alpine Road with spectacular scenery.
Old Gold mines and graves. Colourful buildings. Omeo is the south-eastern gateway to the Alpine National Park in the north-east of the state. Omeo Station was the first settlement in Gippsland (1835) and the township has many places of historical and general interest for the traveller. The old log gaol (1858) is unique, being constructed of Snow Gum and lined with Blackwood. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, there are many drives and walks which can be enjoyed. A round trip to Falls Creek, returning via Mount Beauty is recommended and a look at 'The Brothers' 3 peaks near Omeo Station is a pleasant drive. Fishing the mountain streams is a popular activity and they are re-stocked regularly with brown and rainbow trout. In October, November and December after the snow thaw, the wildflowers are prolific and it is a good time to visit. PLACES OF INTEREST:
