Victoria's first settlement and a major town in the west of the state,
Historic buildings, beaches, walks, Cape Bridgewater National Park. There are some 50 buildings of significant historical importance in Portland. Most of them are on an historic walks tour guide available from the Information Centre. There are also several significant National Parks around Portland, and there are over 17 shipwrecks in the Portland Harbour area. The Great South West Walk begins near Portland and extends for some 250km. towards Nelson and back, taking several days to complete. West of Portland there are wineries to visit and Cape Bridgewater has blowholes, a petrified forest and much else of interest. The area was first settled in 1834 by the Henty Brothers who came from Tasmania and their original home can still be seen on the Bridgewater Road.. PLACES OF INTEREST: NATIONAL PARKS
