Rainbow is the gateway to the Mallee Region of Victoria and will be found in the west of the
state above Dimboola and Horsham. A grain growing area on the fringe of the 'good rains' belt
its fortunes fluctuate with the quality of the seasons. It is a small town at the centre of a vast wilderness touring area which includes the Wyperfeld National Park, Lake Albacutya, and Lake Hindmarsh, Victoria's largest inland lake which is fed by the Wimmera River rising near the Grampians National Park and flowing through Horsham and Dimboola. Facilities include a golf course, shopping centre, hotel, motel, caravan park and a new hospital. Nearby Jeparit was the birthplace of Australia's most celebrated and longest serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, and a park is devoted to his memory in the main street there. Lakes Hindmarsh and Albacutya offer a wide variety of water sports although, in this year, all lakes and reservoirs in the Wimmera and Mallee Regions are struggling with drought. Green Lake, beside the highway east of Horsham, was actually cropped a few tears ago. There was no water in it at all. The Wyperfeld National Park is one of Victoria's largest and offers a diverse range of wilderness activities including walks, picnic areas, camping and a variety of wildlife which flourish in remote conditions. The Pioneer Museum at Jeparit is well stocked with farming machinery, bric a brac, memorabilia and gives an excellent insight into outback life in the Mallee region. A visit to Rainbow and the outback region of north-west Victoria is an experience with a difference and one to remember. PLACES OF INTEREST:
