Warrnambool is at the Western end of the Great Ocean Road and roughly
at the centre of the 'Shipwreck Coast'. Steeped in Maritime hIstory it is one
of Victoria's most popular holday resorts, and the largest city west of Geelong
along the coast. Founded as a port along the rugged coast of the Southern Ocean
it is today a bustling commercial centre serving a vast hinterland producing
wool and grain. The Warrnambool Maritime Centre is an award winning museum and
contains many relics of shipwrecks in the area including an invaluable porcelain
peacock recovered from the wreckage of the 'Loch Ard' near Port Campbell.
The Performing Arts Centre is host to many fine shows and exhibitions, and there are many things to see and do on your holiday. Warrnambool is also the crossroads between the Great Ocean Road and The Grampians. In the past few years, since the rail service to Portland was abandoned, a private rail has been operating from the city to Geelong. Trying to trace relatives or ancestors ? Try the links below.
