DERBY
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Located on the Fitzroy River and King Sound Derby was officially declared in 1883. Gold was discovered at Halls Creek in 1885 resulting in a mini gold rush to the region.
The rich pastoral country along the Fitzroy River, combined with the spectacular beauty of the region ensures its growth and road, air or sea excursions around Derby will confirm its claim to be the 'Gateway To The Gorges'. A 4WD drive along the Gibb River Road to Wyndham reveals some spectacular scenery with gorges and fishing spots. Crocodiles are found at this latitude so be careful when near water.
There is a giant Boab tree some 14 metres in girth which was used as a prison. Derby has the second highest tidal range in the world with some 11 metres between high and low tide. This can be seen from the Derby Jetty, built in 1964 and last used commercially in 1983 it is a popular spot for fishing and bird-watching.
Take a boat or fly to the islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago from Derby, to visit the South Sea Pearl farms and see the famous 'Horizontal Waterfalls'. Take a scenic flight and see how massive tidal movements force the seawater 'waterfall' through a narrow gap in the cliff walls.
