LEONORA - WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Leonora is at the centre of the northern goldfields and the last rail stop on the line.
it is a busy mining centre and a typical Australian bush town with wide streets lined with verandahs.
Gold. nickel and copper are mined in the area, particularly at the Leinster and Laverton, around 100 km. north.
The Western Australian Outback is renowned for its wildflower displays in late August and September and this is a perfect place to view them from with the surrounding plains mainly flat with low mulga scrub.
Mount Leonora was named after wife of the then WA governor by explorer John Forrest in 1869 and Leonora was founded as a goldmining town in 1896 following discovery of gold at Kalgoorlie. it was at that time the largest settlement in the area.
Today it is a railhead for copper and nickel and the surrounding are is a wool producing region. The first electric trams in WA operated here but they are long gone. there are some historic buildings to visit and an Heritage Walk.
Leonora has a 2 hotels, 2 motels, a caravan park and a mining village.
