One of the larger towns on the south coast, Nowra is a popular destination for
visitors because of its proximity to beaches, national parks and the
Southern Highlands. It is linked to the famous Melbourne Cup and the
winner of the first two, 'Archer', was walked from Terara the 880km to
Melbourne to compete in 1861 and 1862, winning both races. Visit Meroogal, an historic 19th century home much as it was in its heyday. The Shoalhaven Historical Museum is housed in the Old Police Station in Kinghorne St. Fishing, golf,swimming, scenic drives. ,br> Nowra was once a busy port servicing the many steamships which travelled along the coast from Narooma to Sydney until the railway reached Bomaderry. It takes its name from an aboriginal word meaning "a camp". Today it is a busy commercial and tourist centre near the Morton National Park and Fitzroy Falls.
