Wollongong takes its name from the aboriginal word for 'Sound of the Sea' it is home to a large fishing fleet and has a picturesque harbour and a lighthouse with sandy beaches.
it is Australia's seventh largest city and the commercial centre of the south coast. Bounded by Mt Keira and Mt Kembla and the escarpment to the west, it spreads along the coast with the Port Kembla steelworks to the south.
In the 1920's author D.H. Lawrence stayed in Thirroul, just north of the city and a little further north is the extensive Royal National Park which buffers Sydney from the south coast.
There is plenty to see and do in the Illawarra region and day trips from Wollongong to the pretty towns of the southern highlands, the Morton National Park, Fitzroy Falls and the Bradman Oval and Museum are easy.
