Marla is on the Stuart Highway, 1050 km. north of Adelaide and 480km. south of
Alice Springs. It is a gazetted town, but mainly consists of a hotel/motel and
police station. It is at the western end of the Oodnadatta Track from Marree and a large sign with distances will be found near the turnoff. Click on the image above for a map if the track. A popular roadhouse stop on the Stuart Highway just south of where the old dirt road passed Marla Bore, a large windmill and tank which was a popular picnic and swimming hole for travellers. The complex which began in the late 1970's has a motel, caravan park and camping area, hotel, diner and petrol facilities. There is also a police station in the town which is on the Adelaide to Alice Springs railway. Just west of Marla are the Mintabie Opal Fields, producing South Australia's only 'Black Opal'. The Marla Races were held annually on a local dirt track. I was lucky enough to have it coincide with one of my trips through and had a great day. Unfortunately the event is no longer held.
