BACK

From Devonport head south through Railton and Sheffield and take the Paradise Road, just west of Sheffield, to Mole Creek. When you arrive at the junction just west of Mole Creek turn west (right) and go to the Marakoopa and King Solomon Caves and the Mole Creek - Karst National Park before turning back to Mole Creek to visit the gallery and honey shop.
Continue through Mole Creek to Chudleigh and see the honey shop there and the Alum Cliffs State Reserve. Just past Chudleigh on the left is the Trowunna Wildlife Park, in my opinion, Tasmania's finest, then continue east to Deloraine and visit the museums and town centre. Bowerbank Mill is on the right through town just before the roundabout and there is an interesting display in a 50s and 60s type milkbar reconstruction just across the bridge. The gardens beside the river are a good place for a relaxing picnic bside the river. (An interesting diversion here is to take the Lake Highway south from Deloraine, over the ranges and on to Miena and the Great Lake. The road is mostly bitumen but there are a few stretches of loose surface around the lake. The drive however is well worth the small discomfort and you will see the small fishing villages along the shore of the lake and some spectacular mountain scenery along the way. From Miena, where there is an hotel, general store and resort accommodation, head south about 12km to the Poatina turn-off and travel up the eastern side of the lake, through Poatina, and on to Cressy and Longford from where you can take the 20km diversion west to visit Westbury, then Carrick and Hadspen on your return to Launceston.) Return through the town and continue east 12km to Elizabeth Town. Through the town on the left is the Ashgrove Cheesery. Return through Elizabeth Town to the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm at the top of the hill and call in for some fresh produce and interesting condiments. Follow the highway back past the Deloraine turn-off to Westbury and turn in. The White House, Fearns Steam Museum and the John Temple Gallery are among things you should visit here. There is an excellent bakery here where you can grab a bit of lunch and pick up some local information.
Return to the highway and continue east to Carrick and Hadspen turn-off. visit the Copper Museum in Carrick and the National Trust property of Entally House at Hadspen before taking the B52 just east of Hadspen and travelling across the highway to Longford. There is much to see around Longford and information is available at JJs Bakery on the right as you enter the town.
(If you didn't already take the alternative route mention before,)
Explore Longford then head south taking the right fork at the town centre and on to Cressy and even further into the mountains to visit Poatina.
Go on to Launceston by either retracing your way through Longford or by joining the Midland (Heritage) Hwy at Powranna and entering via Perth and Kings Meadows. Wilkins Tourist Maps produce a map of this area. You can pick up a Western Tiers map from accommodation houses, attractions, businesses and the information centres in towns in this area.
