THE MURRAY VALLEY
The Murray River makes up around 85 percent of Victoria's northern boundary with NSW and is Australia's
longest river, stretching from the Victorian Alps to Goolwa in South Australia.
In days gone by it was a lifeline for producers along and near both the Murray and Darling rivers with
paddle-steamers plying the inland ports delivering essential supplies and returning laden with wool, wheat and
the fruits of the inland.
One of the major ports along the way was Mildura, but in this guide I considered it is so important as a regional
centre I have given it its own region, Sunraysia. The towns along the river east of this I have placed in the
Murray valley zone although they actually overlap into the areas to their immediate south. The Goulburn and Loddon
Valley regions for example. Basically, this area begins at Robinvale in the west and follows the Murray Valley
Highway through to Corryong in the east. It includes Robinvale, Echuca, Yarrawonga, Rutherglen, Wodonga,
Tallagatta and Corryong and the smaller towns along the highway. The river towns on the New South Wales side
of the river are in the same zone under New South Wales.
A drive along the river passes through rich river flats with wineries, fruit archards, sheep farms, dairy and
beef cattle stations and busy regional centres servicing these industries.
Attractions and facilities in individual towns will be found by selecting them on the menu at right under 'Towns'.
There are several re-constructed river ports along the way at Swan Hill, Echuca and Wodonga. River Cruises operate
from Echuca and Wodonga.
At Rutherglen there are extensive wineries to visit and Lake Mulwala at Yarrawonga is one of Victoiria's most popular
resorts.
Accommodation is extensive and varied and you can find area accommodation by using the Accommodation Search at right.

The main route is along the Murray Valley Highway which you can join at many places along the way. See touring map.
