EXPLORING THE WIMMERA.

Those travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne along the Western (or Dukes in SA) Hwy will pass through the centre oif the Wimmera region between the South Australian border and Horsham. From the north or south take the Henty Hwy between Portland and Hopetoun, the Wimmera Hwy from Naracoorte, and the Borung Hwy all pass through this fascinating region.
25km west of Horsham is Mt Arapiles, world famous for its rock climbing challenge. You can drive to the top and view the surrounding countryside or just watch the many climbers tackling the sheer rock face.
A drive north of Horsham will take you to Dooen, where you turn right to visit Murtoa and see the renowned taxidermy museum, visit Minyip, location site for the series 'Flying Doctors' then head north to Warracknabeal and call in to the Agricultural Museum before heading back to Horsham. An easy day tour. It is also only a short drive to the wonderful Grampaisn National Park from Horsham, only 50km east.
From Nhill, Dimboola or Kaniva you can visit the Little Desert and Wyperfeld National Parks, large wilderness areas which are ablaze with colour in spring and are home to the unusual Lowan Bird which builds a mound of earth to lay its eggs in and lets the sun hatch them.
In the west, Edenhope is central to the world heritage listed Naracoorte Limestone Caves and the many wineries of the Coonawarra, and in the east of the Wimmera the small rural towns of Donald, Birchip, Boort and Charlton are typical Australian country towns servicing regional farming communities.
The Wimmera is a vast region supporting one of Victoria's richest farming areas and offering a wonderful insight into country living.
